4 Must-Know Knowledge Management Strategies
Within the previous article, we summarized the idea of knowledge management and introduced its type and benefits, etc.
In this article, we want to dig deeper into the knowledge management strategies and share the 4 necessary strategies that could help your teamwork.
Strategy 1: Use the SECI Model
Professor Ikujiro Nonaka, a prominent management scholar in Japan, proposes a framework called “SECI model” to advance knowledge management. In this model, tacit knowledge inherent in an organization can be converted into formal knowledge through the four steps of socialization, externalization, combination, and internalization. The contents of each step are as follows.
Socialization
In the socialization stage, some tacit knowledge has already been formed in the organization. Individuals or small groups often utilize tacit knowledge in detail.
Externalization
The tacit knowledge manifests in the externalization stage, where the organization becomes aware of the tacit knowledge. In this stage, tacit knowledge is converted into formal knowledge through manuals and other means.
Combination
Formalized knowledge (or tacit knowledge) can be systematically operationalized in a highly intelligent manner. As it is utilized in this way, knowledge may be combined to further synergize each other and new knowledge may be created. This is the coupling stage.
Internalization
As the operation progresses, the new formal knowledge permeates the organization and naturally turns into tacit knowledge again. This is the internalization stage.
However, the knowledge that is tacitized at this stage has higher value than the knowledge that has been converted to formal knowledge. By re-excavating the tacit knowledge that has increased in value and transforming it into formal knowledge, it becomes possible to sustainably develop the knowledge of the organization.
Strategy 2: Create a Place
The second strategy of knowledge management is to create a place. In this case, “place” does not refer to a spatial location, but rather to a community or an opportunity for tacit and formal knowledge to be shared and accumulated.
This place can be of various kinds and includes not only chatting in the smoking area or cafeteria but also internal social networking sites, online meetings, etc. For tacit and formal knowledge to be shared, it is necessary to increase interaction among employees.
Strategy 3: Create a Mechanism to Leverage Knowledge Assets
The third knowledge management strategy is to create a mechanism to utilize knowledge assets. To keep knowledge management going without making it temporary, it is necessary to create a mechanism that utilizes the information obtained through knowledge management.
For example, the creation of manuals and internal wikis are typical examples. Knowledge management can be efficiently advanced by creating a mechanism to provide knowledge and experience as easily as possible and a mechanism to pass it on.
Strategy 4: Leverage the Knowledge Leadership
The fourth strategy for knowledge management is to utilize knowledge leadership. A knowledge leader is a person who creates and promotes the goals for knowledge utilization to advance toward them.
There are certain difficulties in converting tacit knowledge into formal knowledge, and it may be hard to know what tacit knowledge is valuable to your company or what tacit knowledge you have in the first place. Some may be reluctant to give up their knowledge for fear of losing their unique strengths within the organization by providing tacit knowledge.
Knowledge leaders are the people to address these issues. Knowledge leaders are the key to knowledge management and they can increase the number of collaborators.
